INTERNET 1.01 Introduction
This book is a direct result of the many questions I get "HOW DO I GET MY STORE ONLINE (That's a pretty tall order. My business is providing web-development services, and I prefer to do the work FOR my clients, but there will always be people who want to 'do it themselves' - whether for the challenge of the task, or simply to save the money they would have spent on web-development. Nothing wrong with that. I have often received phone calls and emails from persons who wanted to know the cost of my services, and after I told them, they would go on to ask me how difficult it would be for them to 'do it themselves'. I decided to write this little book in order to provide those persons the information they are asking for, without spending countless unpaid hours on the phone or in writing 'virtual reams' of email answering the same questions over and over. I have done my best to translate Internet and computer 'jargon' into a form that the 'uninitiated' can readily understand. In other words, Plain English. Plain English? There is a lot of 'jargon' associated with the computer/internet, and many new words and terms that are neither familiar or understandable to the average person. I'll also provide you with a 'GLOSSARY OF TERMS' that you may refer to as needed (not all terms will be remembered on the first round, and we all need to have our memory 'refreshed' on occasion). When the concepts get very 'technical', I will also provide illustrations, such as examples and pictures that should make the ideas easier to grasp. My Background I have been working with html and developing websites commercially for 6 years, using it on practically a daily basis. I am (for the most part) self-taught. I have not always had anyone to help me, but I have one or two 'mentors' that helped me to bridge the gap between my own knowledge, and new technologies and concepts. If you are lucky enough to have such a 'mentor', great...but if not, you will need to learn to search for your answers, using the wonderful resource of the Internet. There is an incredible amount of information there for your use - it's very important that you DO use it! |
